the only early system software that apple released for the Plus was

system 3.0 finder 5.1
system 3.2 finder 5.3
system 4.0 finder 5.5
system 4.1 finder 5.5
system 4.2 finder 6.0
system 6.0 finder 6.1
and anything after 6.0

most of these combinations were released on Mac Plus System tools disks at
the time that Mac Plus was on sale.

you will find that some of the copies on the internet are just a system
folder but some are copies of the original system tools disks and they will
include an installer with a Mac Plus AppleScript file.

The installer will create a slightly different system folder for whatever
Mac you need. An example, a Plus has a brightness control on the front but
a Classic does not. If you install a Classic system 6 you get a brightness
control panel with the Plus you do not.

Anything before system 3.0 finder 5.1 will work on a Plus, but the software
was created before the Plus and will not have a Plus installer. I think
this is why Apple say it is not supported.

Making a boot disk from one of these is quite simple. I can do it on OS9 so
it should work with OS8

Have the System 5.0 System Disk image on your desktop. Insert a blank 800k
floppy. Open the disk image and select "install" or "installer". When
prompted to choose the drive, choose the blank floppy.
