The little disposable particle masks will stop pollen and such but you
are correct, vapors will go right through.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with soldering outside. For one thing the
smoke can drift into your face as easily outside as inside. As long as
the area you are working is well ventilated then it should be OK. If
you are really concerned about exposure, you could always rig up a fume
hood arrangement to move air past you toward what you are soldering and
then venting it outside. This could be as simple as soldering on a
table in front of a window and having a fan in the window drawing air
out of the room so any smoke moves away from you.

I have the same philosophy about soldering as you do, though. I don't
think a joint or two is going to hurt much. Chronic exposure, like if I
ran a wave soldering machine every day, would be much worse. I figure
that I get more exposure to "chemicals known to the State of California
to cause cancer" every time I drive on the freeway.

FWIW, I've never bothered with flux paste. I use a good quality rosin
core solder and it has always seemed to work just fine.
