Congratulations on getting one of the coolest printers ever.
I simply love the imagewriter II. I have two, one with paper feed. I'd
like to get one with network card but haven't been succesful so far. The
imagewriter II is just about the most economical print option around. I
even use it to print from my white iBook (using the griffin USB to
serial adapter). What other ancient printer will print from a
contemporary operating system with so little trouble? Besides offering a
remarkeable print quality (compared to other matrix printers) it is
amazingly economic in use. Unlike the inkjets which need their ink
cartridges replaced every few months whether you use them or not, the
imageWriter II costs me little more than the paper it prints on. The
ribbons are much cheaper than ink cartridges and last for ages and ages.
Both Imagewriter II's were rescued from dumpsters at university about 5
years back. Judging by their condition when I first found them they had
seen intensive use, but have never caused any trouble or showed any
signs of failing. I guess they must be over 15 years old by now. There
were 2 more in that dumpster. I greatly regret not having lugged them
out too, but 2 were already trying the patience of my girlfriend to the
extreme...

As for your question, yes, the ribbons are interchangeable. They are
also still available from various sources. Even color ribbons can be
found although these are more difficult to get. (yes, the ImageWriter II
can print in colors using a 5 color ribbon !!)

The b/w ribbons I use are Keymax C.ITOH 8510, they are also compatible
to various typewriters C.ITOH 210, 215, 310, 400. 850, 1550, 1570, 2500,
7500, 8150, 8300, 8500, 9500, 9600, NCR 6411, 6412 etc etc

Hope this helps

Andy
