>So I want an SE/30.

>Where should I look for an SE/30?

In Austin, we have a branch of Goodwill which only sells computer
equipment. It's called the Goodwill Computer Works Store. You
might check to see if there's a thrift store or something similar in
your area which carries older computers. I bought my SE/30 for $15
there. It took me several months, because, while they always had
SE/30s in stock, I was waiting for one with a nice case that wasn't
yellowed with age. It also seems to have come with a motherboard
problem I haven't made time to fix yet (common checkerboard problem).

There is also a local Macintosh Users Group (MUG) here. They
recently had a sale and one fellow had a very nice, perhaps even mint
condition SE/30 for $30 there. I might have bought it but it was
early in the morning and I just didn't feel like spending any money
that early. No, I'm not fully rational before noon.

So you might check to see if you have a local MUG still in existence.
The internet killed most of them because their primary reason for
existing was to let folks of like interests gather and exchange
information. We do that here, without geographical limitations. On
the other hand, it's difficult for someone to bring their machine to
the next meeting so that we can all work on it.

Finally, you might try posting a WTB in the news groups. A subject
like "WTB: SE/30 [specify condition] in [city] Ohio [target price]"
would be good. Keep [specify condition] to two or three words and be
more specific in the body. The appropriate groups would be
comp.sys.mac.wanted and misc.forsale.computers.mac-specific.system.
I'm not certain the latter one is exactly correct, but if you have
news group access you should be able to browse the full group list
and find the one I mean.

You may have local news groups with a forsale or wanted group. For
example, there's an Austin.xxxx hierarchy and one of the groups is
austin.forsale. There's also an austin.gardening. These
geographically specific news groups make a lot of sense for a few
purposes where geography really matters.

The news groups were a wonderful place to buy and sell things with no
fees. Ebay has, unfortunately, dragged off most of the traffic.
On the other hand, there is much more stuff bought and sold than
there once was, so you're much more likely to find the odd thing
you're looking for. It's just kind of sad that this free venue is
becoming unviable because of a fee based venue which offers no
advantages over the free venue.
