MacTCP, even the latest version, will run fine on both System 6 and 7.

There is a MacPPP that works on System 6, I've used it once or twice, 
however it seems more geared towards dialup. You may well be able to trick 
it into working by selecting a null modem cable, but it's not something 
I've ever tried. Would be interesting though.

One option would be a nice LC/LCII/LCIII/LC475 machine. They're pizza box 
sized and tuck away in the corner nicely :) Also Ethernet cards are readily 
available.
