Yo compacters everywhere,

Our Dave Lee <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> weighs in on Stuart's twin floppy SE

<I heard someone shoehorned a hard drive in an SE that had two floppies
already, but I can't imagine how.>

Yup. A couple of ways to do this three drives in an SE stunt.

>From one of our twin 800k floppy SEs donated to the senior center, you can
imagine my utter surprise when first turning it on, IT BOOTED WITHOUT A
FLOPPY! A fast opening of the case revealed an offset bracket that stacked
a 1/3 height hard drive on top of the two floppy drives. This bracket is a
well designed and crafted production item as it even has a part number
stamped into it. This bracket offsets the hard drive to the rear of the
case for a very precise fit between the slope of the CRT and the backside
of the case. Using a common Quantum drive causes no distortion of the
screen image nor overload of the power supply. It runs fine. I still have
this prized bracket. I even took it to Europe last year to share with our
fellow lister here, OM Betz (Hi OM!). We were both amazed with the bracket.

A second option for three drives in an SE case may be found at Gamba's
site. For Gamba, I trial installed a 1/3 height Quantum drive mounted on
edge between the floppy/hard drive stack and the power suppy of an SE. With
a set of three connector power and SCSI cables, this one floppy + two hard
drive SE ran just fine including no screen distortion nor power supply
issues. A heavy set of read-write diagnostic tests of this hard drive
mounted right next to the power supply showed it worked just fine. Gamba's
interest here is a project for mounting a hard drive this way in an SE/30
freeing up the space above the floppy drive for multiple PDS cards. I
haven't his page cite at hand, but a search through Gamba's site will
likely find his drawings for this on-edge install of a drive inside of an
SE or SE/30 case.

Methinks the SE power supply is just a little more "robust" than some fear
it is not.

All of this suggests you could stuff two floppies and two hard drives into
an SE. Hmmm... a twin floppy SE with a boot drive AND a large scratch disk
just for running an early Photoshop!

Bill
