You can plug a USB flash disc into a PCIMCA USB card adapter then select the flash disc for virtual memory and you can work in silence. The apps will run faster and you get much longer battery life. If you put your document on the flash disc as well, the HD doesn't need to do much at all. You can also put a system folder on a flash disc and boot from it. But how does this relate to Compact list?
