I did this several times while getting my SE/30 online...it was scary! If I recall correctly, the problem was the version of Mode32 I had installed - are you using that, yet? The solution in my case was to zap the PRAM (command-apple-P-R during boot), then boot from a System 7 floppy, then zap the PRAM again (somehow booting from 7.1 un-hoses the PRAM zapping process) to reset the boot parameters, then boot from the HD with extensions disabled (hold down "shift" while booting).
