Sounds like termination issue to me. I'd get an actual terminator, and use that. I'd be willing to bet that pass through connection either isn't a terminator, or it's bad if it is.

The other thing would be to try it without that connector installed at all. I've known people to internally terminate external drives because they didn't want to buy an external terminator.
