Doesn't bother me. I believe the reason why it is unavailable from Apple is not Apple being arbitrarily rude to people like us, but that there's some part of 7.1.1 that Apple subcontracted from a third-party vendor, and Apple doesn't have the rights to anymore. For curiosity's sake, does anyone know what part of 7.1.1 this is? And why do some folk prefer 7.1.1 over 7.01? If you're running a 4 MB machine like the Classic, SE, or Plus, what does 7.1.1 give you that 7.01 doesn't?

I am pretty sure that system 6 is too old for a color classic. Here is a link to System 7.1.1 which should run on that mac:

the first disk, install is the one you need to boot from. The rest you will need to install system 7.1.1 on the HDD. For the color classic to read the disk you are going to have to format it HFS. To do this in 10.3, go to /Applications/Utilities and open Disk Utility. Click on the floppy disk image on the left hand pane of devices. The click on the Erase tab. To the right of where it says Volume Format: select Mac OS Standard. Click the Erase Button. This will format the floppy HFS. This will erase all info on the disk. Then simply copy the contents of the .sit file from the location above to the newly fomatted floppy disk and you'll be in business.

PS Technically, I don't think that system 7.1.1 is suppose to be distributed. That link is not my site, but if anyone is upset with my linking to it I apologize. Since Apple distributes 7.0 and 7.5, I don't think it is a big deal.

Hey gang,

I'm fairly new to Compact Macs and was hoping someone could give me a point
in the right direction. I managed a good deal on a few locally and thought
it'd be neat to have one in the kitchen to check email and simple stuff like
that.

Right now I'm working with a Color Classic - it turns on ok and soon gives
the "where the heck did you put the System folder" icon. I've found a copy
of System 6 (downloaded as a .sit file) to install on it but can't seem to
make a bootable disk for it. Currently I'm working from an ibook running OS
X.3 and using a usb driven VST floppy drive, and even managed to find a
couple of Mac formatted floppies (I'm not sure if the CC's superdrive will
accept IBM formatted floppies - like I said I'm new to the old school :) to
try and revive the CC and install System 6.

Is there anything special I'm missing in trying to make a bootable disk for
the Classic other than copying the System Startup contents to a floppy and
running with it?

Any other tips on getting this show on the road would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks!
