Hi all,

I am new to the list as I just got my first compact mac. My girlfriend
stumbled upon a 512ke in her dorm's storage closet, apparently having
been abandoned sometime around 1993 as far as we can tell. It, the
Image Write II that came with it, an its 800k external drive still work
perfectly. It came with its manual, the MacWrite manual, and the
Microsoft word manual, but those disks are nowhere to be found. It did
come with the Macintosh 512k enhanced system tools disk, the software
sampler disk, and the original apple bumper stickers (unused and in the
box that held the diskettes).

I have a couple of questions.

1) I have the opportunity of picking up MacWrite Pro 1.0. Would this
work on a 512ke with (as far as I can tell) OS 3. something?

2) I really can't do anything with this write now except turn it on as
there are no applications to run. Ebay doesn't seem to have software
that would work (all the software I can find requires at LEAST OS 4.2).
Where can I find the old system software disks for these?

3) If I find old system software disks, how do I install them on a
computer with no Hard Drive?!

Your first part. A Mac 512 should be able to run System 3. Also I think it
runs System 6. (Been a while since I took mine out of the closet for a
walk.)

Mac Write Pro 1.0 will work on your Mac. IT MAY need System 6.

There are listers who have some stuff hoarded away. Wait to hear from them.

Working with a 128, 512 and Plus means placing disks in and out of the
floppy slot as the Mac asks for them. Saves are done only while the disk has
the space. Or, you transfer to a formatted 800k blank to save.

A second external floppy drive makes it easier to do things with your Mac.
Or go full-tilt and pick up a good-working external hard disk.
