It is possible that the SE FDHDs you received originally came with HDDs but they were cannibalized for other computers before you got them. I am pretty sure that the SE FDHD only came with a HDD or 2 floppy drives from the factory.

I think you are correct. Every FDHD and SuperDrive SE I've ever seen had
one floppy drive and an internal hard disk, and just said "Macintosh SE"
on the back.

AFAIK, there were no twin floppy FDHDs made. (Cue for someone to say
they've got one! - but what does the back panel say?)

The 800k models were either FD+FD or FD+HD, and said so on the back
cover. The superdrive models were all FD+HD. All factory configurations
had exactly 2 drives, and I think the hard drive was always 20M on the SE.

In the collection sparking this thread, the SE's with just one floppy and
no HD most likely have a dead or stuck HD or the HD was removed. All SE's
(but not SE/30's) have 2 paper clip holes (and 2 internal floppy
connectors); the upper floppy slot is filled when a hard disk is config'd
and there is a window for an HD activity light to show through.

Also, the SE, SE/30, and Classic models all have circuits to discharge
their CRT's and are fairly safe to work on. The Plus and below, on the
other hand, really are dangerous; I just leave them unplugged overnight
before working on their video stuff.
