Hi,

I have two non-working 400k drives with very different symptoms. I've ordered the book Macintosh Repair & Upgrade Secrets by Larry Pina, but I thought I'd ask for advice from people with experience while I'm waiting for it to come.

[1] The original Sony internal drive in my old 128k Mac is jammed. For a long time it worked but required a paper clip to eject disks. Now it seems to be stuck in the eject position (probably the way I left it when I put it into storage). What are the chances the eject mechanism is broken, as opposed to just needing to be lubricated?

[2] I have an external drive I got on eBay. It accepts the disks and tries to read them, buy always thinks the disk is unreadable and asks if it should initialize it. If I say yes, then the initialization fails. The inside of the drive itself is quite dirty, so I'm guessing this just needs to be cleaned.

Any hints? Warnings? Common mistakes?

What is the likelihood of success?

Eric
