I got a battered Mac 512k at a thrift store for $15... But, upon getting it home, I find it has 2048k in it and an 800k drive. This means it has a Mac Plus motherboard in it, right? It isn't possible to upgrade a 512k motherboard to 2048k, is it?

Could well be a third party RAM upgrade board. MacSnap and Dove and many others made them. A Plus l/b would need a new case bucket to accommodate the different port layout with SCSI and round serial ports.
