Hi, Ian. Many of us will tell you not to discharge the Plus' CRT: discharging it will get you closer to the dangerous points than you'll ever be if you only touch the logic board: on any compact, the LB is in the lowest part of the case, and the CRT is in the upper part. Just make sure the Plus is unplugged (not just powered off) when you're working on it. If you feel unsecure, just let it sit unplugged for at least 24 hours before cracking it open - that should be enough for most capacitators to discharge naturally.
If you insist on discharging the CRT, just make sure the resistor you use to bould the tool is rated for high voltage. Such resistors are often very long (4 inches or so) and use a square-section ceramic packaging (AFAIK). Non-high voltage-rated resistors may be short-circuited during the discharge and act just like a piece of wire, with a near-zero resistance. Valid instructions on how to build and use a discharge tool can be found in many sites arround the Internet - just use Google.
