In fact, I think that is what makes out machines, in the end, better than the PCs; our ability to bastar...uh, customize them(!) and upgrade them. Ever seen a x86 or Pentium I machine (especially a laptop!) still able to be an effective tool for today's computer world?
I've got a 486 working as a router on 8mb of ram.
Still use a 486/50 laptop when I'm in bed and in the mood, pcmica 32mb
colour and industry standard components rather than the bowl of fruit old macs can be with piggy back ram modules and deliberately crippled mobo's.
Most factory machines I come in contact with are either 386 or 486 and rather functional, yet to see a mac in that enviroment.
Then there's my beloved Alphaservers one of which is a 4/200 which is completely useful after 10 years and is also 64bit and works well with the macs here when using services for macintosh.
Now, mine will all do email, so what is your definition of an effective tool. I mention email not because its hard although listening to mac users its the holy grail of software use.
I'm happy to knock the byjeepers out of whatever you suggest as I have never worked under the influence of the Jobs reality distortion field nor am I the bastard son of Gates which I have been called before, oh about a dozen times on this list.
Once again, a pc is modular and by its nature FULLY customizable compared with what, form factor upgrades, bleeding edge its not as apple made so much of the same and only changed a component or two to give it a whole new model number.
I'd be more than happy to butcher a imac for a proper custom job than go killing a 575, to each their own.
Do some research or post to the pci list where they believe such dribble.
