Well, I can't tell for sure, but I think I have read somewhere that the
first SE used the IWM controller chip (the very same used on the 128k... and
the original //c). If that's true, you'd need to replace it with a SWIM chip
to access 1.44 Mb disks (in addition to replacing also the ROM and adding an
external 1.44 Mb drive or replacing the internal one). But I may be wrong.
If I am, please correct me.



You may be right; I saw an SE ROM upgrade on ebay.co.uk (oubid for it!) and assumed it was simple. Of course, if the IWM is socketed, then it is.
