Right. In page 88 referring to SE 1.44 Mb drive upgrade, Apple's SE service
manual says:
"Note: The 1.4 MB
SuperDrive Upgrade Kit
available for the Macintosh
SE includes two new ROMs, a
SWIM disk controller chip,
an audio extension cable for
reducing EMI interference,
the new 1.4 MB SuperDrive,
system software, two labels,
and an Apple product return
form."
In the next page, it says the following:
"Using an IC extractor,
remove the IWM chip
and two ROM chips from
the logic board."
So now I can confirm that you need to replace *both* the two ROMs and the
IWM/SWIM controller, and that all these ICs are socketed. A ROM upgrade alone
won't allow the SE to access 1.44 Mb disks - it will only serve as a bug fix
(if there are bug in the SE's ROM that need fixing).
