Hi Again!

I have been playing around with my Mac Plus this weekend trying to get the system up and running as described below, although for now I have skipped the Buffalo Wireless Ethernet Convertor part. I have *nearly* got the thing working, but as ever there are a few little problems left to iron out.

One thing I have learned is that its impossible to get it working from one disk - if you want any other system features like MultiFinder or printing, so for now I am working on two 800k floppies!

I have a few questions, mostly about RAMdisk+, but I figure this place might be a good place to ask anyway!

I have the Mac Plus booting from a System 6.0.8 disk, then copying the contents of the disk into the RAM disk, and it then switches to the RAM disk. I can't seem to get RAMdisk + to read the second disk before switching, so I have to copy everything off that manually. Does anyone know how you get it to copy a second disk too?

In addition to this, does anyone know if there is a way to add things to the System Folder using RAMdisk+? For instance my start up disk is too full to add Multifinder to the first disk so I have it on a second disk. Does anyone know how to use RAMdisk+ in a way that will allow me to copy items from a second folder into the System Folder on my newly created RAM disk?

When I go to the Chooser I click on AppleShare and I can see my "G3" server. For some reason it appears, then disappears, then appears again, I am not too sure why (perhaps the Mac Plus serial port is too slow to read the LocalTalk data from the Asante LocalTalk to Ethernet Convertor?).

When I do click on the "G3" server and try to log in as a user, I get the error : "Some AppleShare resources were not installed at system start up time. Try restarting from an AppleShare workstation disk or reinstalling the workstation software.". All my AppleTalk and AppleShare software is on my first disk, which is the disk I actually boot from in the first place, so I am pretty sure that all the stuff is there.

The only thing I did differently is I didn't actually install the AppleShare software, I simply copied the AppleShare, AppleShare prep and Network control panels from the System Folder of the AppleShare Workstation 1.4.5 disk to my own start up disk. I get this from using just the floppy, and when I have booting to the RAM disk.

Can anyone suggest something I am doing wrong? Does the AppleShare Workstation Installer modify anything else that I need to copy?

Thanks,

Andrew McCall

Hi Folks,

I have been looking around to see if its going to possible to get a Mac Plus
working with System 6.0.8 and AppleShare so I can boot from floppy and load
all my applications from a shared folder off my PowerMac G3 over AppleTalk.
This should give me a silent, useful Mac Plus! I intend to do it wirelessly
too!

In addition to being fun, I want to see if I can actually do something with
a 4.00 (UKP) computer thats comparable to what I do on my 2k (UKP) laptop
:)

Here are my "ingredients":

Apple Macintosh Plus, 4Mb, 800K Floppy
Asante Localtalk to Ethernet Converter
Buffalo Wireless Ethernet Converter
System 6.0.8
AppleShare Network Software 1.4.4
RAMdisk 3.23+
800k Floppy Disk
Assortment of wires to power and network

My intention is to create a boot floppy that sets up a 2Mb RAM disk using
RAMdisk 3.23+ and copies the system folder into the RAM disk. If I can I
will get it to ask me for a second floppy disk that will copy the needed
AppleShare files to RAM too then reboot to the RAM disk. If I can't get it
to ask for a second disk, I will have to reboot to the RAM disk, then
install AppleShare and reboot once more.

Once initially booting from floppy I should be able to boot from RAM disk,
connect to a share my other computer and access all my applications over the
wireless network AppleShare connection to my PowerMac G3!

If this works, I might see if I can get TCP/IP added and see if I can use
the machine over the network for things like IRC, Web and Email - now that
would be cool!

I will be trying to get all of this working this weekend, so I will post my
results - in the meantime, does anyone know of anything I should look out
for or anyone have any suggestions?
