Last week I finally got a Color Classic. I tinkered with it a bit this last weekend, using parts that I had available, and realized I don't know much about these machines.
I started out by installing System 7.1, as the System that was on it was lacking quite a bit of control panels, etc. It almost seemed like they took a boot floppy and put it on the hard drive. After tinkering around with where to put the enabler, I got it to install, and all was good. But you can't buy a machine to tinker with, and leave it as "all is good", so I decided I wanted to put the mobo from my LC 550 into it and see how that would work out. After a very bad time of trying to figure out which enabler a 550 or a CC II required (there seems to be some contridiction on the internet), I finally found out that enabler 403 was the one I was supposed to use. I gave up way before getting 7.1 running on my "Color Classic II", because while I was fiddling with these darned enablers, I started getting a sad Mac on startup, but only when I booted from the hard drive. So I said a few bad words and hooked up a Syquest drive with the 7.5.3 install parts on it. Then I thought, "this is ignorant; why not put in a larger HD before installing this OS?" So, out with the 80M, in with the 1.2G. (an extra 3 inches of wire on the power connector would have saved me the trouble of getting my fat fingers in that tight space to unhook it) After a few tries to get the machine to recognize the SyQuest (gotta have the disk in before you boot the machine) I had OS 7.5.3 installed and running surprisingly well. So now I have a "Color Classic II" with 36M of RAM, a 1G HD, some extra VRAM (I can display 1000s of colors at 560 by whatever), and an ethernet PDS card. This will probably keep me occupied for a while, until I start running into programs that won't run due to the less than 640 x 480 thing. Now for the questions: I noticed this big gaping hole where an FPU should be on this LC 550 motherboard. Does the FPU have to be the same speed as the CPU? I assume so, but figured it's worth a shot, as I have a few 25 MHz FPUs. If I go with the HiRes modification, will I still be able to selct 512 X 384 in the monitors setting? I assume the VGA mod would be a no, but please correct me if I'm wrong on this. Can I just pull the analog board out of my 550 and put it in my CC? I've never seen the 550's analog board, and don't know if it will even physically fit, but if that would work, that's definately easier than hacking up a CC board. Finally, is there a list somewhre on the net that states what software will run on an unmodified screen on a Color Classic. Finally again, is there a FAQ that addresses questions similiar to these? (I've already browsed through pickle's FAQ, and looked at our list nanny's site a bit) Thanks, J White -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
