So now I have a "Color Classic II" with 36M of RAM, a 1G HD, some extra
VRAM (I can display 1000s of colors at 560 by whatever), and an ethernet

running into programs that won't run due to the less than 640 x 480
thing.

Congrats on getting your CC and getting it up and running in CC2 form.

Now for the questions:

I noticed this big gaping hole where an FPU should be on this LC 550
motherboard. Does the FPU have to be the same speed as the CPU? I assume
so, but figured it's worth a shot, as I have a few 25 MHz FPUs.

Ideally, the FPU would be the same rated speed, but in many cases a 25mHz 68882 will run at 33mHz just fine. The clock crystal on the board determines what speed it tries to run the chips at, so in the 550 board it will try to run it at 33mHz.If it were me, I'd try it, but that's me. Just make sure you have it oriented right (there's an arrow in the center of the socket).

If I go with the HiRes modification, will I still be able to selct 512 X
384 in the monitors setting? I assume the VGA mod would be a no, but
please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Can I just pull the analog board out of my 550 and put it in my CC? I've
never seen the 550's analog board, and don't know if it will even
physically fit, but if that would work, that's definately easier than
hacking up a CC board.

Can't help you with either of these. I run mine (with the 550 mobo) at the standard resolution for now.

Finally, is there a list somewhre on the net that states what software will run on an unmodified screen on a Color Classic.

Finally again, is there a FAQ that addresses questions similiar to these?
(I've already browsed through pickle's FAQ, and looked at our list
nanny's site a bit)

Several sites of this type are out there. Here's a couple:

Enjoy!
