You can't go for the original resolution with either of the VGA or the Hi-Res hacks.
Can I just pull the analog board out of my 550 and put it in my CC? I've
never seen the 550's analog board, and don't know if it will even
physically fit, but if that would work, that's definately easier than
hacking up a CC board.
The 550 a/b, like the 575 a/b, is about 2" wider than the CC a/b.
Most of that is 'space', but there's a tricky area where the extra stereo sound circuits were added which makes using a 5xx a/b very messy. It makes using a modified CC a/b look trivial, believe me!
