Download and install CAPer on the NeXT. It's the Columbia AppleTalk package. Lets the NeXT speak native AppleTalk over ethernet. I could actually connect from my Dimension Cube running 3.3 to my Mac Plus that was connected either with PhoneNet to an AsanteTalk bridge or through the Asante ENSC SCSI-to-Ethernet adapter. Look for CAPer at www.wizards.de

Finally, I'm considering switching one or both of the SE/30s to the room with the Next workstation and linksys switch. Hopefully the Asante cards won't have a problem with the switch. One question, though--is there any utility around that would let the Next machine and SE/30s access one another? I haven't gotten around to sharing the Next machine, but suppose that it should be readily done back and forth with Panther using NFS, but that doesn't help with the SE/30s.
