Different machines seem to behave differently in this matter. I recalled my
son's complaint that the crossover cable didn't work anymore between his
iceBook under 9.2.2 and his older machines, and I recalled some advice of
going for a hub rather than a crossover cable (was it Phil's?), we started
experimenting today: iceBook(9.2.2)-crossover-CC(7.1): no dice.
iceBook-patch-hub-patch-CC: Bingo! Checked the crossover cable, all
connections o.k. Next try: old/old, in this case
SE/30(7.1)-crossover-Quadra 650(8.1): no problem! The combination new/new
(if you allow me to call a Pismo and an iceBook, both 9.2.2, "new") also
works over crossover cable; my son says at a time the Pismo could talk to
his mother's SE using the very same crossover cable, but I bet that was
before it was upgraded to 9.2.2. So now I am hunting for a simple hub for
my son's desk to make his LC 475 print server work again. And I am hoping
for an authoritative statement from one of the network gurus on this list
(I won't mention names, it would make the post too long :-D) how this
generation conflict in networking can be explained. HTH, Chris.

Cheers, OM
