SOME motherboards allow the use of a 1.5 V "AA" battery in place of the more expensive 4.5 volt one. Try that first. IF your Plus won't keep time, then go after the 4.5 v one. When starting your Plus, do you start the external drive before you start the Plus? The external drive has to be powered and spinning first.
