SOME motherboards allow the use of a 1.5 V "AA" battery in place of the
more expensive 4.5 volt one. Try that first. IF your Plus won't
keep time, then go after the 4.5 v one.

When starting your Plus, do you start the external drive before you
start the Plus? The external drive has to be powered and spinning
 first.

Jeff G

I certainly do! Yes. Even if I didn''t wait enough, it should be ready when I restart, after a floppy startup. But as i said, it takes several restarts for it to pick up.

And is there a terminator on the external drive?

Sometimes it helps to put an "in-line" terminator between the Plus
and the external drive, even if the external has a terminator.

Ken

Yes, there is a terminator on the external drive. I'll try another
one later. Now, I don't know what an "in-line" terminator is. Should
I change the SCSI ID? I think it is set to 1. There is nothing else
on the SCSI chain.
