Your friend's situation is more common. System 7 includes personal
filesharing out of the box, which is straight appleshare (not
appleshare/ip). When OS X is on the same appletalk network, it can
generally use the shared System 7 drives just fine, with minimal settings
adjustments. Unfortunately, some ethernet switches and many wireless
devices block appletalk packets, which results in "X cannot access 7.1 at
all".

OS X on the other hand, supports appleshare/ip pretty much out of the
box, but not straight appleshare without several tricky configuration
changes. Sharepoints helps you set those options (among other things), so
with some work on the X end, unmodified System 7 clients can use OS X
shares on the same appletalk network. Again, some ethernet switches and
many wireless devices will block appletalk and prevent this from working.
Also, early versions of System 7 don't like volume sizes of 2G or larger.

All those changes recommended in a previous post apparently will give
your System 7 client appleshare/ip capability. This gets through
appletalk-blocking networks (you may have to type in an ip address
instead of seeing shares in the Chooser). Another advantage is
appleshare/ip will have better throughput than straight appleshare. Those
changes are for the client only, so "X cannot access 7.1 at all" would
still apply to some networks.
