How to make ext HD work on a Plus :(

I set up a 300MB harrdrive for my Mac Plus (a while ago) and it didn't 
work.  Made 3 partitions, at this point I have no clue what I might 
have done that it doesn't seem to even see it at all.  One of the 
partitions is running 7.5.  I am tired of running my Pluses for only a 
few minutes because I don't have any storage space with the floppies.

Is this the same issue with OS X that you have to do it on the first 
partition and it has to be certain size otherwise it wont work sorta 
thing?

Can someone also please tell me what OS its best, will I be able to set 
the disk up in my G3, (last time it didn't work at all the Plus would 
spit the disk out) I am at this point using VERY old disks I used to 
use 13 to 14 years ago, whew!

I tried making a boot disk from several System Softwares and none 
wanted to boot my Plus :(
