Hi everyone -

I was at a library book sale this morning, and found, among a few "yard sale"
items there, a Mac 512K (Model # M0001W). It included the keyboard and
manual, but no mouse. It powers up successfully and boots to some sort of
guided tour / introduction to the Mac type program. I assume that this was
some sort of introductory disk that came with the system, and no others were
included. This disk itself was in the drive, and I have not attempted to
remove it.

Now, I'm a pretty complete classic Mac newbie. I was exposed to PowerMacs back
10 or 11 years ago, but that was my only brush with greatness. So I guess I
need some real hand-holding here.

As there is no mouse, my hope was that when I booted up, I'd be able to do
something by way of keyboard shortcuts, and at least interact with the
machine in that way. But there is no reaction to any keyboard input in this
"introductory program". So my first question is: Are there any keyboard
shortcuts that are universal, and should be responded to no matter what
software is running? What I need to figure out is if the keyboard is dead, or
just being ignored.

Secondly, am I in danger of damaging the filesystem on the floppy by just
turning the Mac off with no other interaction? Is there a shutdown procedure,
and can it be done without a mouse. (Didn't see anything in the manual about
this.)

Last, can an old PC serial mouse be interfaced to the Mac? Any pointers to
interface schematics, if necessary. I know I can get replacement mice on
ebay, but as I have a pile of old serial mice kicking around, I thought it
would be a fast way to get the Mac talking to me.

I remember sitting in another library 20 years ago and reading about the
introduction of the Mac in Byte, and it's only taken me that long to finally
own one. Better late than never!

TIA...

Tim
