That symbol is the symbol of the alt-key on more modern Mac keyboards. It doesn't have an escape key either.
The layout of the keyboard is German btw. Some keys are on the wrong place and some keys have 'alien' characters, but that doesn't matter. Because I use a non German operating system (6.08 of course) with an international key layout in the system the correct character appears on the monitor (I type blind).
