You won't see the address show up in the control panel right away. First 
you have to close the TCP/IP control panel to get the new settings to 
save. Then you typically have to launch an internet application such as a 
browser. That will trigger the OS to load up the TCP/IP software and 
request a DHCP address. You can see why I suggested you get AppleTalk 
working first to narrow down the possible problems.

Sometimes people configure static addresses and then try to ping the Mac 
from another computer. That usually fails unless the Mac is already 
running an internet application which has activated the TCP/IP software.
