Spending oodles of time trying to get my 6400 set up as a router for my home network, I stumbled on the fact that LinuxPPC doesn't support the deep, rich sound the 6400 is capable of. Still wanting to use that machine for my music, and looking at the collection of my various compacts, I was wondering if one of them could be used as a router.
Obviously, the choice was an 020 or 030. but I was wondering if anyone has done a router on a compact.
Possible but not recommended. Assuming you are talking about a broadband connection you'll need two Ethernet interfaces. You can do it with one but it is strongly recommended against. It will have to be a SE/30. But the only way to get two NICs is to use a PDS card and a SCSI-Ethernet interface. I've used SCSI-Ethernets but I can't recommend them, it didn't seem to work well.
Your best, low end machine for it is a IIci (or IIcx). You could also use a IIsi. I have successfully used one with two PDS NICs. You have to have one of the back panel connector panels hanging out the back.
