For what it's worth, I have all the same problems on my Classic II.  
I've tried a different analogue board, but it's all the same. Sometimes  
when I get the checkerboard or lines, I can get it to boot right by  
flicking the power a couple of times. Other times, I have to pop the  
case, pull the logic board power and battery, then put it all back  
together and it's fine again.

I have no idea on the sound issue we share, though. Probably a bad cap  
somewhere.
