Most likely the hard drive has failed due to age. Or maybe the software on the hard drive is damaged. To isolate the problem, I would insert a System 7 disk tools floppy containing Disk First Aid and SCSI Probe. Replacing the hard drive is easy if you have the long handle torx tool.
