So I guess you're not a fan of *any* Mac OS that runs on a PowerPC, is
that it? See, Mac OS on PPC includes a Motorola m68k emulator for two
reasons: first, because for early (and perhaps all) PPC versions of
"classic" Mac OS, not all of the OS was ported to PPC (that is, much of
it was still m68k code); and second, to enable it to run m68k Mac
programs. I'm not sure if even OS 9 got rid of all of the 68k code...
perhaps there are others more knowledgeable than I who know this bit of
trivia.

If the emulation in previous Mac incarnations was this . . . obvious and
inefficient, I might be.

Honestly, I'm not trying to stir up trouble here. I was just venting a
little, hoping to catch the ear of someone who understood *why* I enjoy
the older OS's so much.

I get what you're saying, but I take another view of it. I look at what Microsoft did with the Windows NT (e.g. Windows 2000, Windows XP) line in order to make it compatible with Win95 code, and I look at what Apple did with OS X to allow it to run "Classic" code. The Apple solution was the MUCH better solution, and I say that as a student of operating systems, not as a fan of Apple or a detractor of Microsoft. Sure "Classic" isn't perfect, but it's a pretty doggone incredible solution, and the fact that it runs code from 1984 is just stunning.

For me, it's not so much just yearning for the
"good ol' days" either. At the company I work for (a 200+ employee
newspaper office), we've been experimenting with OS X for months, putting
it on one or two machines at a time, truly being afraid to upgrade at
times because we could hardly manage a *stable* machine out of it.
Ridiculous? Of course it is. Could the problems be more with the users
than with the OS? Very likely. But it's really been a challenge. This is
an entirely new experience for me with Macs, which have been trusty and
user friendly for a very long time.

I'm sorry to hear of the challenges you have been having in your upgrade to OS X, but I fear we're getting too far off-topic for this list.
