This was taken from the Apple Service Manual:
"Vertical bars or stripes are displayed: 1 Replace power/sweep board. 2 Replace logic board."
This happened to my Classic, and I put in SIMMS from a box of Miscellaneous RAM chips my dad bought me in Salvation Army for $1. It worked fine after that.
