dead classic

Hi.  I have an old mac classic and i recently decided to dust it off, 
and see what it was like in the 90's.  When i turned it on i was 
greeted by black and white bars about 1 inch thick on the screen with 
some static here and there.  There was no startup chime.  has anyone 
had this problem before?  If so how can i fix it?
