VMWare? Is that like Virtual PC? What hardware do you run it on, the G5? So unlike the OS9 emulation under OSX, the VMWare uses its own protocols outside the OSX environment (according to VMWare website, they don't support Mac OSX)? What System is the SE/30 running ... don't suppose it matters since the NT talks to System 6. Are you running AppleShare Server on the SE/30 or just a client workstation? Seems like overkill to run System 6 on your 512k -- that can't leave RAM for much else. Does System 6 include the HD20 INIT, or do you have to add the INIT (I know System 6 officially does not support the HD 20 itself). Since the 512k talks to the SE, you should be able to run any AppleShare aware system. If the SE/30 is running the server application, then you should be able to talk directly to your G5 vis-a-vis the otherwise compatible servers.

What I've done in the
end is to run a copy of Windows NT v4 (with Services for Macintosh
enabled) in a VMWare virtual machine. NT v4 supports clients right
back to system 6 (unlike Windows 2000 which only supports System 8.5
and beyond) and so I can talk to it from my Plus and SE/30. I use
Windows sharing to access this directory from my G5 which runs OS X.
I've created a system 6 boot disk with AppleShare 1.1 on it for my
512K but this will only connect to my SE/30.
