I do not presume to be an expert, but what I am doing is actually called
"AppleTalk over TCP IP" (according to Apple) -- that is: using the AppleTalk
protocol via a TCP IP protocol to access AppleShare. I know, very confusing.
As I understand it, this is how Apple has set it up over the years,
AppleTalk is the networking protocol, AppleShare is the file sharing/server
application (complete with its own protocols) which uses AppleTalk to
communicate with other AppleShare applications/clients and LocalTalk is the
original hardware needed to connect the AppleTalk network. That's why
printing uses AppleTalk but NOT AppleShare. Since AppleShare is a file
server application, the Mac 512k is using a workstation/client version which
does not have features that the parent application has. The original version
of AppleShare (1.1?) runs on the 512k (but little else) and may not solve
the problem as there were several improvements to ASP in v.2.0 requiring
System 6. Here are some links that delineate some of this Apple-"talk"
vis-a-vis OSX problems, which may or may not be affecting OS 9:

I've been using FileSharing and administering AppleShare Servers for years and have never seen any Apple docs talking about "AppleTalk over TCP/IP". The only time I've seen it is in posts by non-experts.

Take a look at the following for examples of Apple talking about AppleShare IP (ASIP) with no mention of AppleTalk over IP. I in the past have done AppleTalk over IP and it is something else all together.

<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50676>

Okay, this one:
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=45038>
does say AppleTalk over TCP/IP but is clearly a typo.

The reason for going to ASIP was to make use of the larger packet size using IP,about 1500 bytes vs the approximately 600 byte packet of AppleTalk. It cuts down on the overhead increasing the transfer rate. Now if they truly were using AppleShare over AppleTalk over IP they would be encapsulating an AppleTalk Packet in an IP packet so it would increase the overhead and reduce the transfer rate.

Apple does have trouble keeping it straight. In a quick look I found "AppleTalk Filing Protocol" used about as much as "Apple Filing Protocol". It may be that it was originally AppleTalk since it originally only worked over AppleTalk and since they have a tendency to over use terms, "AppleTalk" especially.
