Mmmmm ... perhaps I've put my foot in it. Let's see. If your SE/30 were to run an AppleShare server under OS 8, http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/os8_68030.html then all would be well with Tiger. Then anything connected to the SE/30 would see the G5, regardless of the OS being used. Actually I think I was referring to your setup vis-a-vis your emulated Windows NT/PC -- the SE/30 server running any OS talks to the NT/PC, the NT/PC talks to the G5 and therefore, routed through the SE/30 server a Mac 512k running System 3.3 can talk to the G5 (but not vice versa as pre-System 7 AppleShare requires server software to share a disk with another computer). But, if you have hard disks on your Mac Plus & 512k and are serious about two-way sharing throughout your network, you can run AppleShare 1.1 on a 512k which will enable you to share its disk.
But now I'm confused. If your SE/30 is routed through your NT/PC setup which CAN read and write to the G5, and the SE/30 can read and write to the NT/PC, then I don't understand why the SE/30 can't read and write to the G5 via the NT which should be intercepting and translating requests to and from the SE/30 and G5 -- unless the NT/PC needs to be a server as well in order to translate the AppleShare requests. Hmmm. If that's the case, then you are better off loading OS8 on your SE/30 and routing everything through it to your G5. Then the SE/30 will translate everything to and from the G5 regardless of platform, OS or AppleShare version/method. > From: Geoff Barrall <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Currently my G5 and SE/30 can't seem to transfer files (using Apple > Share) although they can 'see' each other as the G5 appears in the > SE/30's chooser. My understanding from the forums is that Tiger > doesn't work with anything prior to system 8 right now or are you > saying that AppleShare Server 2.0 can be accessed (over localtalk) > from a modern G5 running Tiger? If so I'll certainly pick up a copy. > -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
