I am running an SE/30 file server under 7.5.3 with a 10.3.9 G4 on the network.. When I set it up the first time, in Jaguar, I found that I had to use the mount_afp CLI command but I have been told that isn't really necessary. To me it was a whole lot easier than figuring out the multitude of misnamed GUI switches in system preferences. My scripts fail as of 10.4 and I have reverted to Panther because of it. Apple has formally announced that the change is intentional and not an oversight. A powerbook running 10.4 can access the SE/30 using ftp and (Stairways NetPresenz) but it talks mostly to Linux boxes anyway where ftp is a way of life. Ask off line if you'd like a copy of my tcsh startup scripts that mount the shares on the SE/30 for 10.1.0 through 10.3.9. It has been suggested that an OS 9 machine be used as an intermediate. A junked peecee can be booted with Linux and it will act as a fine ftp-based file server for OS neXt and for classic Macs using an ftp client (Interarchy). With Apple's march toward meaningful filename extensions and packages the resource forks and Finder information of the older file systems are as doomed as a lot of other classic goodies.
