Best price I've found for a PRAM battery was under $5 with free
shipping, but that's not coming up on a search now. Try these:

Sorry to disagree, but there is a misunderstanding of some sort here. A
PRAM battery isn't a PRAM battery isn't a PRAM battery. You are linking
offers for 3.6V lithium cells that aren't the item in question.
The original poster (Scott, I think) needed a PRAM batt for a Mac Plus,
which takes an about AA-sized and -shaped 4.5 Volt alkaline battery,
which was mostly sold under the Eveready brand. But IIRC the Eveready
523 is out of production or barred from selling in a great number of
countries because it contained substantial amounts of mercury, so if
you want to have a correct date and time on your Plus, you're on your
own. There have been threads on this list (we have a wonderful archive,
see footers!) about diy replacements and - I remember this one
specially - one report by a list member who said he fried his mobo when
trying to use three bundled-in-series 1.5 Volt AAA alkalines as a
substitute. I believe him because I saw my 840 AV's mobo die during a
PRAM batt change, and that did hurt. Others may have been lucky with
the "bundle" solution. Personally, for my Plus, I have found a leftover
original in a photo repair shop (hot address for weird batteries!) that
still keeps some charge; they charged me some 20 DM at the time
although the battery had been past its expiration date for two years -
ouch. Hey, where are all the old plus war horses here? All on a
holiday? What are you doing? Marten, still out there? What do you do
about your PRAM batt?
For those who have been on this list for less than ten years ;-) :
There are essentially three types of PRAM batts in Macs (the PowerBooks
are a different story):
1. the 3.6V half-AA Lithium battery that is shared by the SE and the G5
and several hundred others in between; early SEs had it soldered to the
mobo.
2. the 4.5V alkaline round AA-sized battery of the 128 through the
Plus. Banned for high contents of a mix of mercury and unobtainium.
3. the 4.5V alkaline velcroed "brick" Rayovac 640 with a cable and plug
connection notorious from the 630 and the related PPCs. Extremely
expensive but still obtainable today. And to make this on-topic, the
575 through 578CD (and 5200 through 5400) used it as well... Need I to
say I still recommend MacTracker?
For more and probably more concise information see the pickle's FAQ at
http://macfaq.org/index.shtml. Thanks Chris.
Cheers, OM
