I presume the problem to be the hard drive trying to mount but

First of all, congrats for your new machine! It's one of the best Macs
ever.You may be right suspecting a hard drive failure, but it could
quite as well be a software problem. Go out and get the long-shafted
T-15, you'll need it anyway because you'll want to play with this
computer. But get a set of System disks, too, and try to start from
floppy (Disk Tools disk). This way you can check the HD even without
opening the case.

info, the FAQ even has a section about where to get the elusive Torx,
