I have repaired Macs since 1992 and have never used a case cracker. Sometimes it's tough to get the Mac open (I've noticed Classic IIs in particular) but it always works. Just be careful and remove it slowly. I usually press down on the SCSI port to get it started (or the floppy port if it doesn't have SCSI).
Don is right that it's a bit tougher with an SE. I take my SE's very slowly when I open them but I have yet to damage anything by opening the case. I also have a friend who once opened his SE/30 with a case cracker and wound up damaging the case. This is why I have never used one. If you're working with an SE and removing the analog board be sure to take great caution when putting it back in. They are not only difficult to reseat but the brightness knob sometimes does not go through the slot on the case easily.
