Actually, it's a fairly common problem on those Macs. Almost always, it
is due to a failed ("burnt") solder connection on the Analog Board, near
the top as it stands in the machine. There is a 4-conductor plug that
connects via a short harness to the deflection coil ("yoke") on the
display tube. The socket for that plug is on the analog board, and is
usually the one that fails. The remedy is to remove the old solder, and
RE-solder the socket back onto the board. I'm quite sure there are
detailed instructions on the web somewhere.
