In a small way, being a strong player can hurt too.  I'm sure it helps
much more than it hurts but it does introduce "notions" or biases.   A
strong master at chess once showed me a couple of problems that he
claimed a weaker player was more likely to find - because the tactics
involved some ugly moves that completely go against the grain of a
strong player.
