Quoting Darren Cook <[email protected]>:

The self play factor is important because white who plays without
dynamic komi expect black to play aimless moves and thus white thinks it
can get away with moves that only works if black plays elsewhere. So
dynamic komi become very effective for black in this case, because white
expect a different style of play and does not adapt.

So my conclusion is that I also need to do something about white. Easy
would be to enable dynamic komi also for the player who is behind. But
it feels wrong to do so....

Hello Magnus,
By "wrong to do so", do you just mean in the context of a self-play
experiment to discover the effect of dynamic komi?

I mean it feels wrong to let white just take solid territory without playing any unreasonable moves. I love unreasonable moves!

Seriously if it works or not is an empirical question. I was just too lazy to do testing with high handicap games when I wrote the dynamic komi code and it is there one can see the effect fully.

Back then I was only interested if it had an effect on even games. And in testing it seemed to have a very small effect unknown if it was postive or negative so out of safety I would simply not use dynamic komi for white.

Or do you mean you think dynamic komi should only be used for the weaker
player (i.e. the one who has a lead at the start of the game due to the
handicap stones)?

Magnus
