Right, it is about go indeed. See section 5.12 Mathematics. Afterwards beginner mistakes in estimating bounds are avoided more easily. From the upper bound of the number of legal positions L, under superko without passes the maximal game length L follows, then 361^L is an upper bound for the number of possible games.

As has already been mentioned, 2x2 was studied on rec.games.go some years earlier. The exact number of games under a typical ruleset is still unknown though, I think.
