Your point regarding volume made me think about something. I routed the music from the Vaio through my Sonos system and then unplugged the mini-jack end on the computer. There was still background noise. Therefore it had to be coming from too high of volume on the amp (amplifier amplifying the background noise). Then I turned up the volume on the Sonos to its highest and lowered the amp volume level. Even during the lull between songs there wasn't any background noise. I think the problem was that the Vaio doesn't have a strong enough music level to pump through the amp? I guess that is why it sounded fine on headphones but crappy on speakers via the amp? The Sonos Zone Player on the other hand has a built in amp which strengthens the music therefore never requiring the main/external amp to be turned up too loud to cause background noise.
Thanks for your help!
