What player do you use??
try to open windows media player, and play a sound clip or something,
If it is able to open it, make the player to show any visualization,
like equalizer and bars...if it shows like if playing, then you will
need to double check other things, like if you SURE you plug the
speakers plug in the correct socket, try changing them ........

If didnt work, try the device manager, and see if any yellow question
mark or exclamation mark is present there...
If fail too, I would go to what Matt (BigMatt) said, about getting new
cheap sound adapter.
